Il peccato originale

(interludio alle impressioni cubane)

(english version follows)

(segue)...

Insomma vado all'apple store.

Genesi.
I progenitori mangiano dall'albero proibito.

The original sin
(interlude to the cuban impression)
  -->
(follows) So I am into the Apple Store for some problem I had to my ipod touch.
Nothing serious, but this pissed me off since the little toy wasn't, I mean, cheap.
The connector of the dock must be a little dirty or oxidized, and I need to change it.

Well, I go to the apple store.
Everything here is terrific, sixty square meters shop! Few laptop and smartphone really konw how to show off, few compared to the big space. It looks like more a contemporary art gallery, with all the works exhibited at the right distance, like you were here not to ask for assistance or to buy something, but just to admire and contemplate.

In the apple store there is a bar where they don't serve any drink but where, according to its name, some geniuses are at your service: They call it “the genius bar”.
Hey, it must be my lucky day!
My problem is so ordinary and it shouldn’t take some genious!
I explain my problem, the genious gets my ipod.
He goes into the workshop to have a consultation with a collegue (wow! a geniuses assembly!), then he comes back to me after few minutes and confirm the diagnosis: the dock's connector must be dirty or oxidized.
He ask me if it's still under waranty, I replied it is not.
But it doesn't matter, I can pay for the fixing, I try to explain.
“We don't fix” the genius say “when we send a broken product to the assistance they will send us back a brand new one. If your ipod was still under warranty that's for free, otherwise you need to pay.”.

Suddenly my mind was pervaded by biblical scenes.

Genesis.

Our progenitors eat from the forbiden tree.
An apple, according the tradition. Th Church use to call it “original sin”.
According to the christian doctrine the primary sin, from witch all others sins derive.
Not really a very serious sin itself, but a sin “of method”.
In absolute, Adam and Eve did not do an horrible crime, they didn’t killed nobody or something like that.
The just let themselves slip into a worldview that disobeyed to certain dictates, they embraced a
weltanschauung that will lead them towards the ruin, away from God.
That's why they deserve to lose the paradise.

A bitten apple.

Extacly what I'm dealing with today, light years away from doctrinal condictoning: no forbidden apple, just a super cool brand.
I am understanding everything.
The original sin really exists.
It's a worldview we embraced.
Not a crime itself, but just something that disobey to certain principles, namely common sense and
sustainability.
Risking to lose another paradise, this planet.

In this worldview we made, it's normal to throw away something broken instead to fix it (and buy a new one!).
It's completely illogical.

It's our original sin.
Once we accept such kind of inconsistency as a methodological premise, we can accept everything afterwards!

We can accept that hordes of young people can stay in queue all night long just to wait for a brand new technological device come out!
Not even a new device, just the updatet version of an already existing thing!

We can accept that such a super bullshit as the Ipad is hailed as the discovery of the century. We can acept to buy a different version every year (liiiiiitle different!) The final trick in it? Just a smaller version of something we already have.

The counterculture imaginary such as old times rock and roll when fans used to follow their idols because their music represented a certain worldview or a break with the burgeois conventions, has been plundered.
Of course, a naive view, maybe.
But those people was just not moved by tunes. they were moved by ideas.
was the real think different from middle class mentality

Today this company created around its a kind of magical aura, thank to its leader's charisma, and drown with both hand from the counterculture world.
Just they don't spred ideas, but products.
Through the thin “think different” philosophy and using its founder's biography as a founding myth, Apple was able to create a religion!
Millions of people with the same products, proud to “think different” everybody at the same way (and often without enought sense of humor to understand the nonsense)!

Young people who use the same revolutionary ways of the old counterculture not to shout to be against the system, but to state to be proudly into it.

The same capitalist and consumerist system we belong since decades. But at least in the past decades people used to belong to this system with burgeois discretion, not with young (and shameful) pride.

Anyway it's not fair to talk only about Apple. The company from Cupertino just represent the most
advaced and evident way our original sin set in our lives. The examples could be dozens...

At the very moment I thought these thoughts I realized that the Western civilization was at the pick of its decadence.

I am still here, into this big shop-museum, plenty of wasted squared meters that could host the fully furnished shop af a tailor, a shoemaker, a carpenter. And there are just few tables with few technologic stuffs, an “assistence” desk with a boy who answer to you “ you have to buy a new one”, when you ask him just to fix something.

A tailor, a shoemaker, a carpinter. Does this crafts tell you something? What do you do when you have fo fix your dress or shoes, or when you need a small table?
While I brood over this follies, my mind brings me back thousands kilometers away, some month ago. I am in another planet. I'm back in Cuba, I'm walking through La Havana's streets...

  1. the good old times always seem better or sweeter to our eyes. especially when we don't understand what's going on.

i dont think that the good old rock and roll counterculture was somehow different from what we are seeing now into apple stores or similar.

gold seller ipod or big hts records are just commodities if we try to look at them from a certain distance.

i.e: can you picture what was the face of our old grandfathers when they were looking at those big queue around the block as the new generations let their hair grew longer and skirt shorter while waiting to grab the latest 45'' beatles hit or - whorse - hunting hours and hours for their big idols to come out from and hotel room and begging for an autograph?!?

they were not having a clue on what were goin on. To our grandfathers, music was just a commodity which leaded thier sons to a world they could never understand.
a 45'' hit was not just music: was lifestyle, fashion, hairstyle, new words to learn, new dances to meet new people. The willing of sex freedom and the feeling of a new concept of youth.

do you really think we are going thorugh different times now?

the commodity has changed, not the impact on people.

the new rock and roll stars are the big hi tech C.E.O. such as zuckenberg or steve jobs.

music has probably lost its primary gain. or simply has told everything that could have been told.

its time for new things now.
    things we cannot understand now.

we are the generation in the middle: old enough to see what our grandfathers or fathers lived, but still young enough to feel quite confortable with all this new stuff.

but we are not the new millenium kids.
we grew up with the good old countercoulture and we wont probaply never accept that simply, things have changed.
devices will pprobably be the next revolution. we still dont know which kind of revolution, but something is goin on.

this remind me a bob dylan tune, "Ballad of a Thin Man".where bob dylan depitcs an old journalist walking through the room of an house where probably a party has just took place. This man, mr. jones has been hit by confused vision of a generation of freaks which seem aliens to him.
and bob dylan ask him a simple question: "you know that something is happening here, but you don't know what it is. do you, mr jones?"

anytime i step into this new cathedrals called apple stores or whatever i feel like mr jones.
i know something is happening there, but i dont know what it is.

still i prefer bob dylan tho.
(playing loud on my brand new iPod)

  2. I do agree with you Michele about the narrow-mindedness old generation's point of of view. I know that all the news are hailed with suspicious.
I also know that the music system has always been an huge money machine, even in its more alternative form (“the great rock'n'roll swindle”, do you remember?).

The only difference is that the counterculture used to transmit “ideas”or, if we don't want to fly so hight, at least an artistic expression. And only aftewards this expression become a product.
Now the companies make the product first, and then they stick some idea on it.
First you used to get an idea (strong, breaking) through a product (cheap, shareable, often impalpable).
Now you get a product (expensive, exclusive, not shareable) through an idea (very weak and pretty artificial).

I think that the big difference it's all in this reversal.

(Naomi Klein in “No Logo” argue very well about the big companies' trand to gain a “soul” focusing their advertaising in cheap philosophy , apparently putting the product in a second plane:
    Apple : think different!
    Nike: just do it!)

We don't need discuss about the fact that a song is also a product.Of course it is! All the art is also a product. Something you can buy. But you can also share it, memorize it and play it with your guitar, whistle it on the street. You can enjoy a Picasso even if you can't afford one! You can enjoy “Imagine” for the rest of your life with a veeeeeery low money investment.
The percentual of “trade” in a cultural product is very low, the “emotional” one is very hight.

I have nothing against the new youngh people who follow new trends or counterculure. I'm just worried when you put a technologic device instead than a song!

Maybe you are right, we belong to a generation in the middle, maybe it's something we cannot understand properly.
But at least such blog's post can witness, for the future generations, that “before” was different!

(If there was no ipod maybe now you was listening Bob Dylan in a vinile with a record player, with some friend. Or with a hottie ;) )

A prezzo intero?

Kiss!
